Aloha to our fellow Kauai residents, property owners, and visitors to our beautiful Garden Isle.
We are calling upon your help today, as the Kauai County Council seems to be intent on passing a bill that would make vacation rentals, cottage rentals, and B&B rentals illegal. Many of these current rentals, which comprise around 25% of the Kauai accommodation market (based on a Comparative Island Lodging Shares graph by the Kauaian Institute), are owned by local Kauai residents who depend on this rental income to supplement or solely support their families. All of these rentals are maintained by cleaning, gardening, and other maintenance individuals or companies also residing on Kauai. Many small local businesses would also be negatively affected by such a drastic measure. One can easily see how the whole island economy would suffer, and residents may be forced to sell their homes because they can no longer afford to live on Kauai.
We believe that the Kauai Country Council proposed Bill No.2204 would have detrimental effects to the people who try very hard to make a living on Kauai, and that we the people must act now to prevent hardship, injustice, and substantial loss of income to Kauai families.
We propose that all existing vacation rentals and B&Bs be granted permits to continue to operate, essentially to be grand-fathered-in.
We must ACT NOW!
Next County Council Meeting is on March 21st, 2007.
9 AM in the old County Building on Rice Street in Lihue.
Please sign this PETITION by 3/20/07!
And if at all possible (we know we all have jobs to go to...) ATTEND the meeting on March 21. We need a show in numbers!
